Daytona Bike Week 2008
Five enthusiastic Aussies arrived at Daytona, in a black Hummer emblazoned with the Australian flag and blacked out windows. Talk about a kangaroo with a gold tooth. In tow was a bike built by a small specialist engineering firm from outer Melbourne here to take on the Americans in the Battle of the Twins for all comers at Daytona.Ken and Barry Horner of HRD Engineering have not only redesigned and built three Irving Vincents to compete in the Classic Classes in Australia, they have now designed and built a 1600 CC version to comply with the American rules and won at their first attempt. Without any corporate or government help the Horner Brothers have put Australia in the media spotlight before the biggest motorcycling showcase in America.
Yes, they were riding on Dymags.

Going the extra step, "beauty is more than skin deep"
One of these days I'll get a nice digital SLR but until then, I'll defer to the beautiful photos taken of our carbon-fiber rimmed motorcycle wheels taken by others. Don Smith has a great write-up on dragbike.com in part 4 of the on-going modification to a stock 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Unlike other lightweight, race-style wheels, Dymag goes the extra step to make sure their wheels will pass BS, DOT-E and JWL standards for road use. Many of the lower cost competitors in this market do not manufacturer their wheels to these standards, which often results in failures. In our years of having these mounted on many high horsepower/high torque bikes, there has not been one single failure of any type. In our case, these bikes have been drag raced, street raced and set numerous land speed records.
Don continues,
Once on the road, the new Dymags laced up with the Pirelli tires were found to be a great combination. Not only does the bike feel like it lost 20 lbs. when riding through the twisties due to the lighter rotating mass of the wheels, but it also feels like the tires are wrapped in fly paper. After a normal warm up period, the tires inspire a lot of confidence, and we never felt any transition between the softer side and the more mileage-oriented center section.

More praise from Reg
We've written about Reg Pridmore before - he's written us again with more details. Be sure to also check out his promotional video showing the cowling-eye view of a quick lap around the course - you'll find yourself leaning to the side just to compensate for the anticipated G's!
It’s been said that “experience is the best teacher” and I know there’s a lot of truth in that short statement. I like to think that my initial contact with my new good friends at Oncycles.com and Cycle Cat was purely due to my past riding and road racing success and experience back in the 70’s.Racing experience has always led up to performance products that in some cases make even the less experienced amongst us look great and feel great about even our everyday riding. That’s exactly how it is with the Dymag Wheels and Alth brake rotors from Cycle Cat and Oncycles.com that I recently put on my two Honda RRs.
But my experience began to shine through when I first jumped on my shiny red little CBR600RR with its brand new brilliant red Dymag magnesium wheels fitted with Dunlop Qualifier® tires. Wow! How nimble can it get!? Plenty nimble. The turn in was effortless and the bike accelerate and handled beyond my wildest expectations!
Next was the special ordered orange magnesium centered with carbon fiber outer rims with a new set of Dunlop slicks fitted to my Repsol replica CBR1000RR. I thought this bike accelerated well in stock trim but I had no idea what adding these new Dymag wheels would do to the acceleration. And the handling? Well, I had a new bike! Jumping on the Repsol for some hot laps around Mid Ohio’s 15 turn smokin’ new ribbon of asphalt was more fun than I have had in a long time.
Overnight we opted to change to the Italian Alth front rotors that Oncycles had just air-freighted to us. My 1000 immediately went from two-finger to one-finger braking effort anytime I felt like it. What a difference and what a great combination with my DP-Brakes HH pads. The 600RR fell into the same category. I had never had either bike go, stop and handle so well.
It was a great experience riding both bikes. All of a sudden I realize that experience is teaching the teacher, as it has done so many times in the past. Thanks Alfred.
Reg

Smooth-Riding Reg Pridmore on Dymags
Three time AMA Superbike champion and Hall of Fame member Reg Pridmore runs a popular motocycle racing school and recently sent us pics of two of his bikes fitted with new Dymags. Part of his approach is to use your body weight more than your handlebars.
“I believe that being smooth isn’t just an artful or elegant way to ride the bike, though it is those things, too. you need to be smooth before you can go fast, and you need to be smooth to be safe. I also put a lot of emphasis on ‘body steering’—using subtle weight shifts to initiate turns, rather than being forceful with the handlebar.”
We hope his Dymags make smooth riding even more intuitive!

Closing in on 220 MPH
In case you're wondering what the latest is out at the Maxton Mile, we're now hearing that people are reaching speeds just shy of 220 MPH. Riding a "naturally aspirated Suzuki Hayabusa" (which when we last heard of it was on Dymag cast magnesium 5-spokes), Dave Owen is shooting for 220.55 when the weather clears up.
There's also a video taken on board where you can see for yourself what it's like to clear 200 on two wheels.

Vivaldi Racing Update
A little late getting to an update on Scott Smart 's Wins at Donington on Apirl 8th. Scott's podium first place was a first for Team Vivaldi Racing who are using Dymag's 7 Spoke Forged Mag wheels in the British SuperBike (BSB). Scott held off strong competition in round 2 during a very wet race to gain his 4th ever career win in BSB.
Unfortunately, luck didn't hold this past Monday in Thruxton as "gremlins" decended upon the team. We all wish them luck as they look forward to Oulton Park Apirl 29th.

2. Next, you will be presented with the wheel styles that are available for your bike.
3. After making your wheel style selection, you will select your size and sprocket number.
4. Finally, you will be asked to select from the available list of colors for your chosen wheel style.

Rave Reviews from Dave Cooper Racing
We received the following note from Dave of Dave Cooper Racing. Thanks for the kind words and we'll see what we can do about making a set of wheels that not only look and handle great but also keep riders from crashing your bikes!
Please find attached photos of our Honda RS125 Race
bikes fitted with your 5 spoke carbon wheels that competed in the BSB series
last season. I'd just like to take the opportunity to mention how pleased
we are with your product and that it total transformed the way the bike
handled making the bike steer quicker due to the massive weight saving over
the standard wheels. The quality and look of the wheels instantly made the
bike more noticable to everbody in the paddock. Overall the number 1 bike
finished 7th at the end of the season which we are very pleased with,
however if the rider(Ashley Beech) hadn't crashed three times whilst in the
lead then we would have ended up third overall, but hey that's racing.Kind Regards Dave Cooper

Oral History of the San Francisco Motorcycle Club
I just heard a great story about one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in North America. The San Francisco Motorcycle Club has been in existence since 1904. The club sounds like the quitessential San Francisco institution. If you live in the San Francisco area or are visiting the city and are into motorcycles, you should visit. From their website FAQ:
The San Francisco Motorcycle Club is, paradoxically, made up of people who aren't club-types. Club-types gravitate toward associations because all they're interested in is the posing. A club doesn't provide them with instant gratification. Our clubhouse is kept up and filled by people who enjoy motorcycles, and since you seem inclined that way yourself, you're likely to meet people at the clubhouse who share your interests. Stop by on a Thursday evening or for a club ride and check us out. Do not be deterred by the application process, just stop by and hang out a while. The clubhouse's walls are covered with 99 years worth of framed photographs, banners, awards, trophies and documents. It's a veritable museum to San Francisco motorcycling, it's free to drop in, and you should.
You can listen to a story of the club's history and view a page with lots of great photos and links at Sparkletack.

Chuck Whitman, 25k miles & counting
![]()
We love to hear from our customers. When it's cold and wet outside and we're facing another long week of cranking out product, it's great to see and hear how people use our product and appreciate their quality.
Chuck Whitman writes us from the state of Wisconsin in the United States (come to think of it, it's probably cold up there too) and says he's been riding on Dymag rims for six years.
I have about 25,000 miles on them & would never want to go back to factory rims again. They add great looks & much better handing than the factory rims did.
Right on Chuck! The bike looks beautiful. Thanks for writing in.
If you use Dymag wheels and want to be featured on our site, send us an email with a photo of your bike to info@dymag.com

New Advertising Campaign?
Surfing around late at night and we came upon an offer we couldn't refuse. To promote it's interactive advertising service, Yahoo Australia was sponsoring an event where two ad executives in a box would work on your pitch and come back to you with an idea.
We run a pretty tight ship here at Dymag so we jumped on the offer and fired off our "brief" to the guys down under. Here's what they came back with:

You tell me. I think they misunderstood us and thought Dymag made tires.

Thumbs up from webBikeWorld
webBikeWorld has a first person review of our wheels and compliments how easy they were to swap out with stock wheels on his Ducati (providing some helpful tips along the way). Reviewer David Young goes on to say,
The bike felt significantly lighter in motion with much less effort in turning and no apparent change in mid-corner stability. While I don't know if it was the wheels or just getting more comfortable on the track, I began experiencing wheel spin on turn exits from the rear tires. While this was a bit unsettling the first few times it occurred, it was very controllable and provided little actual drama. My lap times have dropped noticeably since the wheels were installed no doubt assisted by the move to softer compound tires. In conclusion, I am very happy with the results of the wheel swap. While the performance gains were enough to justify the change alone, the positive comments I get from people who see the wheels makes the efforts all the more enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend the update to lightweight aftermarket wheels whether your preference is to improve performance, appearance or a combination of both.

Dymag Bling
The Oct/Nov issue of the Australian magazine Rapid has a piece on how they are upgrading a standard Suzuki "Gixer" and part of their upgrade includes a set of Dymag Forged Mag 7 spokes.
The Dymag's sprocket and carrier were a piece of cake to fit. Dave from Sydney Dyno slipped them in in no time. . . It was as simple as swapping the front rotors over and fitting the original spacers. The performance gain is outstanding in both handling and acceleration, not to mention the bling effect!

Dymag Drags

Think Pink Racing (they spend more time on their bikes than the web site) recently sent us a newspaper clipping showing Sandra Chaplain's recent success on the Dymag Carbon 3 spoke wheels. Needless to say, they are very pleased.
This is great news for us as you can imagine the amount of torque transferred to these wheels by these specialty bikes would tear up any carbon wheels that aren't up to the job.

Phase One Endurance
World Endurance champions for 2000 and 2003 (and currently sixth in the 2005 standings) Phase One Endurance rides on Dymag wheels.
Endurance racing is much more than just a long race that goes into the night, it involves an entire team that must prepare and strategize to eek out every last drop of performance from their machines and riders.
Endurance is unique in the reliance it places on teamwork; arguably more so than in any other form of motorsport. The bike itself is ridden by two or three (or even four during qualifying) riders and must be set up to work for all of their differing styles and requirements. Success on the track is based on more than just the fastest lap times; races can be won or lost in pitlane with a badly timed fuel stop or botched tyre change removing any lead that the riders might have built up. By eking out the last litre of fuel capacity during every session of a twenty-four hour race a team might avoid an extra pit stop before the end of the race, giving themselves a thirty seconds advantage that could be enough to take victory. Of course, if their calculations are wrong and the rider has to push a dead bike for half a lap, all that effort is wasted. (FIM World Endurance Web Site)

Here's a Phase One rider at Suzuka in Japan last month.

Team nVidia wild card entry at Brands Hatch in UK
Some skillful riding from rider Dennis Hobbs from Team nVidia gets him past the likes of Norrick Abe, Pierfrancesco Chili, Ben Bostrom and Garry McCoy to take a position in the top 16 grid for the race. The final grid positions are then settled by a single flying lap. Despite a small mistake, Dennis' superb riding gained the notice of quite a few of the press who were following the event.
Dennis (who rides on Dymag 7 spoke forged mag wheels) went on to say, “I made a small mistake at Surtees, I just committed too early. But it wasn’t too bad for my first Superpole. I think if I hadn’t made that error I could have at the very least gone forward onto the third row.”

MotoGP at Laguna Seca
![]()
Rossi threads a corner. Thanks to Andy for the photo.
By now you've all heard the news from California. The Italian superstar Valentino Rossi had to settle for third place behind two Americans, Nicky Haden and Colin Edwards. This was a weekend of firsts. The first time Nicky had qualified for a pole position, the first time Nicky had a Grand Prix win, the first time Rossi had raced on American soil, the first time this writer had the good fortune to see a MotoGP event live, and the first time a MotoGP had been held in the United States since 1994.
The course is best described in Nicky's own words,
The track has a good mix of corners. Turn 1 isn't a real corner but its on the crest of a hill and the bike goes light but you have to get it slowed for turn 2 which is a double apex where you sort of let the bike drift out then pull it back to line up the right hand turn 3. I really like turn 4 it's a fast right probably the only corner you really work the tyre hard. You leave the infield section on a quick left, which used to be a dangerous corner but it’s got a good run off now." "It leads up the hill to my all time favourite corner, the Corkscrew. It's an incredible feeling when you tip it in, left, right then another left with the track dropping away from you all the way. It's amazing. Down hill from the corkscrew can be pretty hard on the front end but if you get the combination from the corkscrew down through turns 9 and 10 you can make up a lot of time. But when the front goes off late in the race it's real difficult to hold your line through 9 and 10.
It was an amazing event that brought motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world. Hells Angels with beards & bandandas admired gleeming display bikes lined up on Ducati Island alongside weekend racers in their leathers and Sidi boots. At one point, the Honda booth fired up the engine on a classic 1964 GP racer which quickly brought together a crowd of fawning gearheads. After the five minute symphony of the machines deafening roar the Honda mechanic cut the engine and the crowd broke out in spontaneous applause.
Dymag wheels were on display at the Cycle Cat booth which drove it's rolling display out from Ohio on a three-day tear to make the opening. The display of multi-colored wheels drew interest from serious riders like moths to a flame. We had to turn folks away who wanted to buy the wheels right off the display rack for fear we wouldn't have anything left to show for the rest of the weekend (UPS had wisely set up a booth in the vendor area to for just such an occasion). No worry, Dymag wheels can soon be purchased online by anyone interested from Cycle Cat's new web site, oncycle.com.

"The exact speed was 213.26509 mph"
At the May Maxton Mile land speed event, Lee Shierts (no, that's not Lee in the photo above) held on for dear life as his 2004 Suzuki Hayabusa (1397cc) ripped down an old aircraft landing strip and cleared 200 mph. The engine was tricked out with a NOS wet nirous kit which boosted the normally 228hp engine to 285hp. Dymag wheels were an important part of the bike and if that speed isn't impressive enough, Lee also holds the world land speed record on an open wheel bike set in 2004 (also on Dymag wheels we'd like to add) at an amazing speed of 256mph! Doesn't time start to go backwards at those speeds?
The track is on old Air Force base from WWII in North Carolina that has been shutdown since the 60's or 70's so the condition, as you can see in the photo above, is very poor. All the more reason to be riding on Dymag's tough UP7 forged Magnesium wheels.
The strip has a 1 mile run up with the top speed measured using timing lights over a 132 foot section. There is less then a mile to shut down so, as the event site says, "brakes/parachutes are critical."
Many thanks to Don Smith for the photos and details. Don will be writing this up in an upcoming issue of Super Streetbike magazine

The Dymag Difference
Don Smith has a great write up on the difference that carbon fiber wheels can make on a high performance bike and on the excellent workmanship of Dymag wheels in general.
The beauty of Dymag wheels goes deeper than the Corvette like finish. They actually powdercoat them instead of painting which helps keep them looking new for a long time. Even after repeated removals and constant banging of the calipers and various wrenches and tire changing machines the old set on our 1999 Hayabusa stayed looking sharp, showing the durability of their finish.
and our favorite,
. . .the difference is amazing. The bike turns and handles like one that weighs 40lbs less.
